ERROR Failed to copy SMSSETUP Licenses – This post describes an issue where the user sees error related to smssetup licenses. Not all users encounter this issue, i would say it’s a very rare issue. The error mentioned in this post is observed while installing SCCM 2012. I have listed out 2 resolution steps, either of one will fix your issue. Troubleshooting

During the installation of system center 2012 configuration the following error is observed in the ccmsetup.log  “Failed to copy SW_DVD5_SYS_CTR_CONFIGMGRCLT_ML_2012_MULTILANG_CLIENT_SCEP_MLF_X17-95285

Resolution

1) This issue will not get resolved if you install the SCCM again or re-download the SCCM iso file. The actual issue is the license files of SQL 2008 R2 is not being copied to the path inside program files. To fix this issue, make sure that you don’t extract the Configuration Manager ISO file (winrar or 7zip) and install it. It is always recommended to mount the ISO and then install the Configuration Manager.

2) This issue can occur when you extract the ISO file to a folder and start installing it during which if the path length of the files becomes greater than 256 characters then installation can’t copy the files and throws the above error.
