How to deploy SCCM 2012 Lab setup In this post we will see how to deploy SCCM 2012 lab setup. Deploying SCCM 2012. Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2012 (SCCM 2012) is a Windows product that enables administrators to manage the deployment and security of devices and applications across an enterprise. SCCM is part of the Microsoft System Center 2012 systems management suite. System Center 2012 Configuration Manager provides more effective IT services by enabling secure and scalable software deployment, compliance settings management, and comprehensive asset management of servers, desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. A member of the Microsoft System Center suite of management solutions, System Center 2012 Configuration Manager increases IT productivity and efficiency by reducing manual tasks and letting you focus on high-value projects, maximize hardware and software investments, and empower end-user productivity by providing the right software at the right time. Configuration Manager helps you deliver more effective IT services by enabling secure and scalable software deployment, compliance settings management, and comprehensive asset management of servers, desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. The Domain name for this lab is PRAJWAL.LOCAL. If you are setting up a lab, choose your own domain name. The DNS server is installed on the same machine where Active Directory is running. The SQL server and WSUS will be installed on SCCM machine. You can choose to install SQL server and WSUS on different machine, however to keep it simple I will be installing SQL and WSUS both on the same machine. We are going to create a standalone Primary site in this lab.

Lab Setup Info :

Softwares Required:

During the deployment of SCCM 2012 we require few softwares which must be downloaded. Here’s the list:

Download Net Framework 4.0

Download SQL Server 2008 SP2

Download WSUS SP2

Download SQL Server 2008 STD

Download SQL CU9 For SQL SP2

Download SCCM 2012 R2

User Accounts – I have created a user account named “sccmadmin” and the user account is the member of domain admin. This account will be used to install and configure SCCM 2012 throughout the lab. A domain user named “test” is created and this user account will be used to login to the client machine.

Hi Prajwal, Thank you for these articles. Do you also provide classroom/online trainings on SCCM?

  • venkat

Hello Prajwal Desai, This is venkat, I need to know about the instalation using VMware in my laptop, Does this possible to install in one laptop, if yes Please exlaine the requirements and guide lines. Thank you.

    • Yes it is possible, what laptop are you using ? Can you provide me the hardware specs of the laptop..

  • Jamal A M

I have a laptop (HP) with 4 GB memory.
    I have installed Windows 2008 R2.
    Active Directory installed.
    DHCP, DNS installed
Can I have SCCM on this same machine, if yes please guide

    Thanks & Regards

    • You can limit the machine RAM to 1 GB on which you have installed AD,DNS,DHCP. You can create another VM for SCCM, but believe me it will be really slow.

  • 8GB of RAM is sufficient for SCCM + SQL installed on same machine. For AD and client machines you could allocate 1 GB each for VM.

  • Hi Shashi, you can check my posts on deploying software updates and ADR.

  • Hi there Prajawal. Thanks for this series of posts abou SCCM. Really inspiring. I´m new to SCCM and it will be a big hand 🙂 Congratulations

    Hi prajwal,
Thankyou so much for giving this knowledge. I am very much new to sccm 2012.
Wondering about what configuration system i should be having for setting and practising the lab.
    Mine is i7 6500u, 500gbhd, 8gb ram, Basically alienware r2 13 inch lap.
Is it good to go as a starter or do i need an upgrade? Or can i manage the lab through some other software like vmware?
Let me know where and how to start practicing lab. just post me the link from where to start initially. All i need at this point is a push start help for a fresh student. Just let me know in serial wise so i can learn step by step from the base.
Thanks again for incredible knowledge you posted and it is priceless.
